In the aftermath of the events of "Ground Zeroes" and the destruction of Militaires Sans Frontières, Big Boss falls into a coma. Nine years later, he awakes and forms a new mercenary group, the Diamond Dogs. Now under the guise of the codename "Venom Snake", he ventures into Afghanistan during the Soviet war to track down the men responsible for MSF's destruction. Along the way, he becomes reacquainted with his former rival Ocelot and encounters a unit of warriors robbed of their past, present and future. While he and Kazuhira "Kaz" Miller are initially driven to exact revenge, Snake soon unearths a plot by the Cipher organization to develop a weapon with the potential to surpass even the Metal Gear system, and his mission quickly switches focus to ending this new threat.
After the fall of Mother Base 9 years prior, tactical legend Snake falls into a coma. When he wakes up in a Cypriot hospital, he see'a that he has lost his left arm, and that there's shrapnel lodged in his skull, and debris still in his body, he escapes from the hospital worth He help of a mysterious man when the people who are hunting him down, the Cipher network, attack. Now back onto the field, Snake, having adapted the persona of Venom Snake, reunites with former rival Ocelot and friend Benedict 'Kazuhira' Miller to rebuild Mother Base and avenge themselves by destroying Cipher. But that is no easy task. Even though Snake is alive, the whole world wants him dead.
Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain is the penultimate journey in Hideo Kojima's classic saga; even though it's a prequel there is a good deal of surprises to be found in the story. The gameplay is nothing short of phenomenal and there's so much attention to detail graphically and narratively speaking.

The Phantom Pain is a gaming experience to be remembered for generations to come. Its immersion for the players is unsurpassed, its atmosphere phenomenal, its story a bit sparse yet massive in scope and ambition. Hideo Kojima has made the 2001: A Space Odyssey of video games right here. There's endless subtexts throughout, visually and script-based, and that's excluding the ridiculously tense and terrifying start of the game, where you're at a hospital in Cyprus, trying to escape certain death.

If you haven't played the game yet, please do so, and play the 'Day One Edition' on the PS4: the definitive version of this modern masterpiece.
The Phantom Pain can best be summarized as a great game, but a terrible Metal Gear Solid. Smooth, polished and awesomely fun, it's a joy to play and will keep you entertained for dozens of hours. The fact that it's unfinished is indefensible, and the open-world concept is clearly overambitious and underdeveloped, but the game has some excellent moments and is certainly worth playing… make no mistake though; it's a complete and utter betrayal, virtually unrecognizable from the previous games you know and love. In this regard it falls catastrophically short of expectations, getting the story monumentally wrong and comprehensively failing to deliver a suitable, satisfying conclusion to the acclaimed series. The tone and atmosphere is totally alien, and the classic style and feel of a real Metal Gear Solid is painfully missing. The omission of David Hayter's iconic voice is a final unforgivable nail in the coffin. For all intents and purposes, the game might as well be it's own separate, original, standalone title, completely unrelated to Metal Gear Solid. Overall, I cannot possibly overstate how crushingly, heartbreakingly disappointed I am with The Phantom Pain.

For the full review, please see https://www.reddit.com/r/metalgearsolid/comments/410mvq/metal_gear_s olid_5_the_phantom_pain_review/

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance: 2018 No. By the title, he is indeed "Big Boss". However, he is not "Jack" or "Naked Snake" from Metal Gear Solid 3, Portable Ops, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes. He is a former medic who was close to Naked Snake, and was deemed the "best man" in MSF. Ocelot and Zero opted to use the comatose Medic to be Big Boss' body double. In doing so, he assisted in creating the legend that is "Big Boss". He would be officially named Big Boss by his friend (and the man he covered for) at the end of the game. Yes, although the DNA tests prove negative that he is Venom Snake's son. This is because Venom Snake is a copy of the real "Big Boss", and he was proven not to be the father of Eli. However, Eli was completely unaware of this, and his anger towards his father still existed until his own death in 2005. Regardless, he still displayed a distrust of adults, and would likely have been the same way toward Venom Snake whether or not he knew about the ruse.
